David is a 27 year old man with severe quadriplegic cerebral palsey who lives with his parents in a rural part of Scotland. David has limited communication skills but is very interested and aware of his environment and has a cheeky sense of humour.
Helen became involved as his case manager in 2011 and set up a private care team to assist the family with all David’s daily needs. Over the years the team has grown as David has made the transition to adulthood. We have recruited a specialist seating team to help the family purchase a dynamic wheelchair for David, which has lead to an improved quality of life for David and he now engages in a varied timetable of weekly indoor and outdoor activities, including learning sessions with one of our team who is a qualified teacher. He has regular private physiotherapy at home and enjoys swimming every week. The family have purchased a partially suitable property which they are extending with a wing for David and his carers and a hydrotherapy pool. The proprty is very rural with lots of land and David’s family are looking forward to him taking an active role in caring for pigs, hens and horses that will be acquired for the land.
As an occupational therapist, Helen was able to advise the architect and family with this exciting project. Throughout the process of case management, David and his family’s needs and wishes remain central. As well as recruiting private services where required, we work very hard to ensure that David is able to access statutory services where appropriate.
